Hello, my name is Elder Sanchez. I came to the United States in 2008. Living in America, and not being able to speak English was very challenging. I remember going to the movie theaters with a friend of mine. She wanted me to buy her some popcorn; when I went up to the counter, the cashier asked me if I wanted anything else. I panicked, I did not understand what she was saying so I took the popcorn, dropped all the money I had in my hand on the counter, and walked away. This, along with many other interactions encouraged me to look further into programs that could help me learn English. A friend of mine told me about the ESOL program at Jackson Mann. That week I put an application in, and a year later I was admitted into the program. I had many mixed feelings on my first day of ESOL classes. Before the Jackson Mann Community Center, I had not been in school for about eight years. I was very anxious but my teacher, as well as other staff in the Adult Education program, made me feel welcome. They were an amazing support system. With all the support and hard work, I was able to graduate from the ESOL classes and move on to the Hi-SET program. I am proud to say that I was able to receive my Hi-SET diploma. I could not believe that four years ago I did not know a word of English and now, I not only am confident in my English, but I also received my Hi-SET. Next year I am looking forward to applying for college with the hopes of becoming a nurse.
I am here representing all those who once thought that learning English or finishing high school is impossible. But surprise! That is possible. On behalf of those who could not be here today, and with all my heart, thank you, everyone, for all your support. God bless you.
Elder Sanchez attended ESOL classes for two years and HiSET classes for one year at Jackson Mann before obtaining his High School Equivalency diploma. He was honored with an Outstanding Student Award at the Allston-Brighton Adult Education Legislative breakfast on May 4th, 2018.
