Adult Enrichment Classes

Welcome Back Allston/Brighton!

When the Jackson Mann Community Center opened in 1976, community classes were offered on an ongoing basis. Through the years, participation and enthusiasm seemed to diminish. Now however, the need for adult Enrichment is bigger than ever and and we are happy to offer courses once again, through out the year.

Our pilot session was last spring and marked the beginning of what we hope to be a tremendous resource to you, the residents of this community. We are open to your suggestions as to what you would like to see offered here and of course, if you are interested in teaching a skill of yours please let us know and we would be happy to consider it in our programming!

Class Descriptions

Acoustic Guitar Taught by Antoinette Perry

The acoustic guitar can be traced through history all the way through the ancient times, in its current form and shape, the acoustic guitar is influenced through the Spanish culture, from here is where it became popular in all of Europe and eventually worldwide. Mastering the acoustic guitar requires extensive practice, and this class is the place for those who are looking to gain the necessary knowledge to make this goal more reachable.

This class is a great fit for a person who is just starting out and picking up a guitar for the first time or if they are more familiar with playing and just want to fill in some gaps. Over time and with practice Antoinette will make people feel more confident playing and enhance their skills through the study of different and more complex techniques as the course advances.

Acoustic Guitars will not be provided, students will be responsible for bringing their own.

With over thirty years of expirience teaching in the fields of commercials and staging, Frank Storace is the director of "The Actor's Workshop" and also a casting consultant for film and television. In addition to stage roles in Boston and New York, he has appeared on ABC-TV, PBS-TV, WNAC, HBO and numerous commercials and industrial productions. he is an active member of AFTRA,SAG and EQUITY.

This course aims for numerous goals that  include individual self-improvement, enhanced communication skills, honing existing theatrical abilities and preparation for full time study in the future. Components of study include basic acting, speech, improvisation and movement techniques. All skill levels are welcome!

Mindful Meditation Taught by Leslie Ingram

How do you relax?  As our world becomes more complex and we take on more and more responsibility, our life naturally becomes more stressful.  It has been proven that stress takes its toll on our bodies, physically and mentally.  Although meditation is not a cure to the complexity of life, it can alleviate stress and perhaps provide space and a moment of peace.  Guided meditation is a great way to begin learning how to 'sit' and begin to open to your deserved moment of peace.

Materials Suggested:
·       Yoga Mat
·       Small blanket
·       Small pillow for head and/or knees
·       Eye Pillow

The materials above are suggested for your comfort.

Piano Taught by Antoinette Perry

For all levels of players. Keyboards will be supplied during class for use by students.

Knitting Taught by Leslie Ingram

If you are looking to gain a new skill or simply trying to find a new way to relax then knitting is a wonderful option. Let our experienced teacher Leslie Ingram show you and your friends new ways to create your own crafts. No experience necessary!  If you can tie a knot, you can learn to knit!

This course will introduce the basics of knitting, casting on, knit & purl, cast off, hand position and learning to read a basic pattern. Individual assistance will be provided, in order, to begin a basic project when comfortable.

Materials required:
• 1 Set of Knitting needles (US 6 or US8), these are a fairly common size I would recommend purchasing a longer set;
• 1 Skein of Yarn, recommend a material that you will be more likely to use in a project, however, it will be used as  purely practice material.

Sewing Taught by Renee Mattier

Picture
Renee Mattier has been sewing for over 40 years, and works with all kinds of sewing machines, industrial 20u, embroidery machines, and sergers.  Her specialties are children wear and accessories. Renee even does specialty orders for baby blankets, drapes, slipcovers, and fleece jackets and hats.

This course is for all skill levels. For beginners it will be an introduction to the fundamentals of sewing. Participants will learn how to use a sewing machine, choose and cut patterns and use basic sewing terms, methods and tools. More advanced students will also be taught different techniques and styles as well with there being less of a focus on the basics and with the being emphasis placed on more complex creations.

Soap Making Taught by Nadia Lynn

Picture
Discover the art of soap making and make wonderful gifts for friends and family. Learn to make wonderful styles of soap in all kinds of shapes and colors using a variety of natural materials and scents.

Tarot Card Reading Taught by Leslie Ingram

Picture
Learn to use tarot in basic and deeper way.  Yes, we can read the 'book', however, a more interesting level can be attained through developing a deeper connection to your deck, seeing the 'story' of the cards.  During this course, we will begin each class with a short guided meditation, to prepare for the class, discussion of cards and meanings, both given and individually understood.  Later in the course, we will hold practice readings.

This class is an introduction to reading, novice readers are also welcome to join this group.  If time permits, we will introduce Oracle Cards.

Materials Required:
Tarot Cards, however, not necessary for the first class, when we will discuss deck selection.
